Levelhead… augmented reality game

08.01.08 | Comment?

Augmented Reality can be more than a tool for engineers or scientists. It can be fun :) Through Hinterding.com I learned about Levelhead, a “spatial memory game” by Julian Oliver which looks just fabulous. The game is simple – guide a person through a maze of rooms (with a MC Escher twist). However the UI and the display is rather unique. It is an augmented reality game. The rooms are virtual and only exist in a computer and are visualized on a display. The UI consists of three small cubes with 3d barcodes on their sides. A camera films the cubes, analyses the barcode and position and maps this to the virtual rooms. Through manipulation (turning, twisting, switching…) of the cubes in the real world the player manipulates the virtual world as well and has to guide an Avatar through the maze.

This video levelHead v1.0, 3 cube speed-run (spoiler!) from Julian Oliver on Vimeo shows the beauty of it.

While the game might be simple it transports this feeling of really looking through a window in a different “real”ity – the same feeling I had back when I played little computer people :)
